Magazine Monday - on Tuesday

Good morning friends.

I'm sorry I didn't get this posted yesterday. I spent the entire day in a funk. I thought it was because I'd gone back to bed at 5 a.m. and not gotten back up til 10. Going back to bed in the mornings will give me that 'drugged' feeling so I try not to do it. I found out later, it was probably had more to do with a soul visit from a dear friend.

A couple months ago I posted an eagle 'get well' card that I'd made for my friend, Wally Bailey. I've known Wally, his wife Sonja and their families (both immediate and extended) for over 20 years. Yesterday we all had to say goodbye to the husband, father, grandfather, our friend. It's a difficult time and my heart aches for them. The only thing I know to do from this distance is to offer up prayers of healing and to pour my feelings into my art.

We had been told on Friday it was about making Wally comfortable. So the first card I made yesterday morning was a sympathy card I knew I'd need. I just didn't realize how soon.

The card was inspired by the March Card Kit Swap Soni and I both belong to on Splitcoaststampers. The Kit Hostess for March 2011 was Dody and she sent a great envelope of things to play with. I came up with 7 cards mixing and matching Dody's items with my own images and paper scraps.

The design idea came from the April 2003 issue of Crafts n Things Magazine and artist Melanie Douthit. She is a talented freelance artist who morphed into using scrapbook supplies in her art. I hope you'll take a few moments to click on her name - linked to her blog.

Here is the sketch from the inspiration:

And here's what I came up with from Dody's kit. This is the only card of the seven I didn't add anything to except Wild Wasabi card stock to accent the yellow and the scalloped circle Dody included.
I'm going to miss Wally. All of us who knew him, will. But it seems appropriate the items to make this card came from within Soni's circle of card artists to send her comfort and love.

  1. Ahhh...no wonder you were in a funk! It's hard loosing those that you love and when you are away from them you have such a feeling of disconnect because you can't be together to mourn your loss. Wishing you all the best during this sad time. Fondly, Roberta

  2. Thank you, Roberta. It means a lot you stopped by.

  3. Kelly - thanks for featuring my inspiration / link on your blog. Thanks for the sweet note. Yes - my blog has been neglected. I'm back to full-time art and have a website/blog at www.melaniedouthit.com. And this time I'm incorporating some scrapbook stuff into my art here and there. Thanks so much!

  4. Oh my... how sad. I am so sorry!!! I will get a card to Sonja. Give her my support and sympathy!!! Hugs,

  5. Hello KellyS. Thank you so much for browsing my blog and joining as a follower . Hope that you find little snippits of ideas that you think make your visits worth while . Love your sympathy card and your journalling in your post . I really liked that the embossed panel coordinated with the background paper so well .Genuine condolences to you and your friends for the passing of a loved one .
You will see that I am now a follower of your blog , not just because you are of mine but because as I browsed through your creations I see such inspirational sketches and cards.
    Hugs Shirley-Anne

  6. Oh thank you so much yes my circle is always rounded with much love, I am so blessed ...you being my friend even before our crafting time together gives us a different level of love and friendship...
Wally was proud to be "uncle wally " to sue, and was happy to know we stayed close after the physical distance happened... I love you Kel, for who you are ...Soni

  7. Very nice card Kelly!! Love the colors.

  8. Beautiful card! It's great to see another stamping witch out there too! I see you use lots of SU stamps-me too! Have you seen the new catalog-woo hoo! Happy Stamping. Keep up the good work!

  9. I see I've had some comments come through since I replied to Roberta's that didn't come through my email until I received notification of Moon's comment.

Thank you all for your thoughts. Soni is moving forward with life as a widow... such a negative word for the positive person she is.

Yes, Moon, I do use a lot of SU... mostly because I play on www.splitcoaststampers.com a lot and although you can use NVR (no vendor requirement) on most swaps, they do pop up the most LOL I'm gradually going to mostly SU or DCVW papers. And with the except of Memento brown and black inks, all SU inks for both stamping and watercoloring. I hope you'll click on my profile and email me so we can connect. I'm following your blog.

Many Blessings to all of you!
