WOYWW #354

I was so not prepared for this morning. Woke up with a sinus headache. Went back to bed long enough for the dogs to start carrying on. A big black Angus cow was taking a stroll through my orchard. I do not have cows.  I let her wander on her merry way then decided I needed to get the day started.

Let's see... in the foreground is the cover of the En Masse journal. The brown paint started peeling up so I had to do some touch up work after I got the signatures stitched in. I ran some gesso over the stitching while I was priming the peeled areas.

Beyond that you'll see a couple of stamps and ink spots where I added inside goodness to a card before mailing yesterday.

The red and green bags beyond that?  This is Emergency Preparedness Week in Missouri. The green bag holds all of the items for our Emergency First Aid kit and the red is a backpack for the purpose.

Regardless of where you live, being prepared for the first 72 hours following a natural disaster is very important. If you would like to know more, check out my post yesterday HERE That is my Ozarks Journal Blog. On Friday I'll be talking about what is inside that red back pack. In the meantime, do you own a whistle? Every member of your family should have a whistle in case of a disaster. Why? In case you can not call out loud enough repeatedly for responders to find you, a whistle will work and they are trained to listen for them amongst the rubble.

That's my desk? What's on yours? When you are done visiting me in the Ozarks, please hop on over to Stamping Ground where Miss Julia has a long list of other studios you can peek into. No standing on an up-turned milk pail to look in the window. We open the doors wide and welcome you. We won’t touch.. just look. J  I can't wait to peek but if Bob is home for I might be late again getting 'round. Pleaseleave your number and you'll be first on my list.

  1. Hi Kelly, I know about emergency bags, our son has one for earthquakes etc, living in CA, he used to get quite obsessed when our first grandson was born, had them running up the hills, backpack etc on their backs to make sure they could carry everything.
My boss in England kept the Angus cows as a hobby, LOL

  2. I'm sorry to hear about your headache, and hope you're doing better by now. I try to have somethings ready for emergencies, but don't feel I'm as prepared as I need to. Happy WOYWW!

  5. Hope you are feeling much better now, you have been in the wars.
Had a look at your previous post - for someone who sits in the relative safety of middle England it is amazing! Will have a longer read later.
Take care and have a good week.

  8. *waves* Hey Kelly, :) ( I am glad you told me your scs name because, I "know" there are a few gals who play along with this each week and most of them I do not end up connecting their blogs with scs unless they use the same name :) The bags sound like such a smart thing to do. hope you are feeling better, ~Stacy #55

  13. Hi Kelly, Hope your headache has gone and the cow doesn't return:)

I doubt most people in England have even given a seconds thought to being prepared for a disaster of some kind. All we need is the power grid to fail and we would be in trouble.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

    Happy WOYWW

  14. You've given me the kick up the backside I need to put together an emergency pack in our house. My husband and I often talk about what we shoukd have to hanf (oddly in relation to a zombie apocalypse scenario which he's convinced will occur!) but we've not put anything together and in reality, would probably even struggle to find candles in a powercut! It's now firmly on my to-do list.

I don't think I'd react so calmly if I saw a cow in my garden - though given I live in the centre of town it seems very unlikely!

Thanks for sharing. Happy crafting, Max #49 :-)

    1. Max. Just the simple things. FI, my sister got up this morning to a broken water pipe which flooded her bathroom and her laundry room. She had to turn off the water. She did not have any 'back up' water for something as simple as flushing! And she lives in the country. Doesn't have to be a Zombie apoc. Just every day occurances. Glad to kick :-)

  15. I'm not prepared for major emergencies, but I always feel better when we have lots of food in the house. In the winter I always stockpile UHT milk in case we get snowed in. That's about as far as it goes, I'm afraid. Great coincidence that I had a book cover on my desk as well! Thanks for visiting earlier! Have a lovely week! zsuzsa #41

  16. Sorry about the headache. Hope it got better throughout the day.

My husband and son have their kits ready to go all the time. Hubby has a small bag he takes everywhere that has the 'essentials' in it, another for emergencies and another for when we go camping (sort of a hobby of his lol). We had to tweak the camping/hiking one. I had him add toilet paper and hand sanitiser after getting stranded without it lol.

    Have a great week

  21. The book cover looks great, Kelly - a nice project to be working on. I am so glad that we live in a place not noted for natural disasters! A whistle is a good idea. The only emergency bag I have is my stoma Kermit's emergency kit in case he springs a leak while I'm out lol!

Thank you for your visit and your nice comment - I think we can often learn something from things that aren't really our scene, and I find this one of the joys of WOYWW! You must admit the video was pretty good!

    Happy belated WOYWW,

  22. Do you know, the first paragraph of your blog sounds like a great beginning of a story! I'm sorry you had a migraine, they're not fun at all, but I hope you develop it into your first novel. Why was the cow there?!
The emergency preparedness week sounds a brilliant idea...hope it all goes well.

  23. I'd not heard of Emergency Preparation. It seems like a sound idea. We don't get tornados here (Spain) but we live in the country and I do have bottled water and long life milk at the ready. We have a gaslamp in case of power outtage (a regular occurance), and our house is (so-say) earth quake proof. I like the idea of a whistle.
    Thanks for visiting earlier,
    Have a good week, Blessings,

  25. Emergency Preparedness Week sounds a brilliant idea - my sister used to have a pack like that when she lived in California but luckily her earthquakes were only tiny ones. What a great start to your blog post - a cow was wandering through your orchard - there could could be so much more to that story!
Hope your sinus problem clears up, it can be so painful can't it - and thanks so much for the visit to my desk earlier,

  27. Hi Kelly the Scouts would totally concur with the be prepared motto, and it's true. I must confess I do have an emergency bag packed just in case, but need to redo tablets etc.
... a whistle, now I have one but not sure I would've thought of it.
I used to keep it near the phone when we had this nuisance person ring, I did use it once then. Before then it was my playground whistle,
    as a chalkie.

Thanks so much for sharing and for popping over already too,

  29. Don't really give it much thought here in the UK (though my family in NZ do as they have a lot of earthquakes), though having said that I do have a wind up radio and torch and a small first aid kit and charged power bank for a phone that I keep handy, so perhaps I think about these things as a matter of course? Or, more realistically its my Girl Guide training from all those years ago to "be prepared" that has stayed with me.

    Hope the cow has scarpered!
Thanks for visiting my desk already
